De Kelders/Gansbai – Grootbos Nature Reserve

Welcome to the Grootbos Nature Reserve.
As Cape Town is only 160km away this unique lodge is perfect as your first or last stop on your way to or from Cape Town.
The minimum stay here is with good reason two unforgettable days.

We advise you to stay at least for three or four nights at the Grootbos Nature Reserve if possible.
It is worth it so you will not regret it.

Even though we stayed here several times, we like to go to the Grootbos Lodge again and again!
You will enjoy your stay there, too.
The Grootbos Nature Reserve has got a size of more than 1,000ha and thus it is one of the biggest private nature reserves. It is mostly the Fynbos vegetation which is typical for the cape area that is protected here.

The biggest Milkwood forest in South Africa is a home to numerous animals. If you hike through the nature reserve shortly after dawn, you will make an unforgettable experience.
An experienced biologist and zoologist will accompany you to give you an understanding of the bush.

More than 200 different protees (South Africa’s national flower) grow at Grootbos.
The amount of different colours is very impressive.
You can have a close look at these unique plants on an accompanied landrover tour.

You can also go on the beach.
The Walker Bay is perfect for hikes on the beach.
Just call the reception and you will be collected and taken to the lodge.

The stables and the mountain bikes are free for use any time.

A special event: Between May and December more than 600 whales come to the Walker Bay.
You can watch them from the lodge.
If you go on an excursion to the beach, the distance between you and the whales will shrink to 20m. Courageous people can go on a boat trip. The whales are very curious and will surely come very close to the boats or dive among it.

You will not find many places in the world, where all this is offered with such a great convenience.
Every cottage provides you with a view onto the sea and is equipped in safari style.
The equipment was decorated with five stars with good reason.

The cuisine combines European and African food and is as good as in a star restaurant.
